Architecture of Stillness

A collaboration with Renato Nicolodi, where concrete becomes both structure and atmosphere.

Architecture of Stillness — Renato Nicolodi concrete sculpture series

Working with Renato Nicolodi means working at the intersection of sculpture and architecture. Over the years, we have had the honour of realising several of his works in concrete — among them Belvédère, Aedicula, and Deambulatorium III, the latter presented through Axel Vervoordt Gallery.

Nicolodi's work is defined by precision: archetypal forms, monumental geometries and carefully controlled proportions that evoke temples, corridors and places of contemplation. Translating these forms into concrete asks for more than technical execution. Every edge, every shadow line, every surface decides how the work is experienced.

Our role begins long before the casting itself. Together with the artist, we refine proportions, engineer moulds, test finishes and develop concrete recipes capable of carrying the desired depth and stillness. The challenge is to let the material disappear into the work — so that form, light and silence take precedence over weight and mass.

Many of these pieces appear almost immaterial despite their scale: monolithic forms with surfaces soft enough to absorb light rather than reflect it. Reaching that balance requires a continuous dialogue between artist, engineer and craftsman.

What emerges is not simply a cast object, but a built presence — concrete shaped into a space for reflection.

Concrete becomes a vessel for silence, proportion and light.
