Concrete Stories

In dialogue with Il Granito

A collaboration with Il Granito exploring how recycled aggregates can give discarded stone a second life — and concrete a new visual language.

For decades, Il Granito has worked with some of the most expressive natural stones in Europe. Under Angelo Rizzi, second generation of the family-owned business, craftsmanship and material knowledge have remained at the centre of the company's identity.

Together, we set out to investigate how their offcuts and aggregates — usually treated as waste — could be reintroduced into our concrete mixes without compromising finish, durability or strength.

What emerged is a series of test castings, each panel revealing a different mineral palette: warm earth tones, cooler greys, soft pinks. Fragments of recycled marble, granite and travertine surface through the concrete, giving every piece a depth and grain that can never be repeated exactly.

From this research came a first object: a sculptural washbasin cast with large recycled travertine aggregates. Polished smooth, the surface carries traces of the stone's previous life — each fragment suspended in the concrete like a geological memory.

Reusing what was once cut away — turning leftover stone into the soul of a new surface.
